The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative and corrective maintenance on fleet vehicles and equipment including gas and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air brakes, forklifts, tankers and trailers.  This position requisitions parts, oil, gas, fluids, etc. for inventory and is responsible for the organization and cleanliness of the assigned shop area.  The mechanic will communicate daily the service stats with drivers, dispatch and operations.


  • Confer with customers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements
  • Examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunctions
  • Troubleshoot and repair fleet vehicles and equipment
  • Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brakes, fuel systems, wheel bearings and other potentially troublesome areas
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications and tune-ups
  • Program and record assigned preventative maintenance tasks
  • Tear down, repair and rebuild faulty assemblies such as power systems, steering systems and linkages
  • Repair and service air conditioning, heating, engine-cooling and electrical systems
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers’ performance specifications
  • Test drive vehicles, test components and systems using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges and computerized diagnostic devices
  • Purchase supplies and be available to perform light office and grounds maintenance
  • Maintain parts inventory and budget
  • Maintain work area ensuring organization and cleanliness
  • Ensure safe work practices
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED or Equivalent and 1 year of related work experience and 2+ years technical education or 3 years of hands-on experience
  • Basic electrical/systems troubleshooting knowledge
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Positive team-player attitude
  • Possesses exceptional worth ethic, energy and drive
  • Ability to handle physical requirements, including but not limited to, repeated bending, stretching, twisting and lifting up to 60 pounds
  • Ability to obtain CDL B within six months of employment
  • ASE certification required within specified period time
